Besuch des Open Ground / A Visit to Open Ground
Leitung: Dr. Julian Hanebeck Termin/Date: Samstag/Saturday, 14.11.2026; 18:45 Uhr Ort/Venue: Open Ground, Alte Freiheit 25, 42103 Wuppertal

The CGS invites PhD students of the University of Wuppertal to a special evening – we’re off to Open Ground! Open Ground is an internationally acclaimed club at Wuppertal’s main railway station, housed in a former bunker and hailed as the ‘best-sounding new club in the world’ thanks to its uncompromising focus on acoustics and the sound system.
At 7 pm, the owner will personally guide us through the club and provide insights into this special venue, its origins and its unique acoustic concept. It is no coincidence that one of the rooms in the club is called ‘Freifeld’ – this alludes to the so-called ‘free-field simulation’: the creation of conditions in which sound waves can propagate freely and without disruptive reflections. The rooms at Open Ground are elaborately clad with polyester fibre panels, so that disruptive reflections are largely eliminated and club-goers hear the music almost as if they were outdoors on fresh snow.
We’ll meet at 6.45 pm at the club entrance. After the guided tour, we’ll spend the waiting time together at Café 23 until we kick off the club night at Open Ground at 10 pm. The Guardian has also described Open Ground as a possible ‘world’s most beautiful sounding nightclub’. Will the sound really move audiophiles to tears of joy? Let’s find out together!
