Enrolment renewal for doctoral students

Re-enrolment up to and including the twelfth semester

Up to and including the twelfth semester of the doctoral programme, re-enrolment is effected by paying the semester fee by the deadline.

Re-enrolment after the twelfth semester

In accordance with Section 4(2) of the currently valid BUW Enrolment Regulations dated 4 February 2026, doctoral candidates may be enrolled as doctoral students until the end of the semester in which they are awarded their doctoral degree, but for a maximum of twelve semesters.

An extension of the enrolment period may be applied for on a case-by-case basis from the relevant doctoral committee. To this end, the doctoral student must submit written evidence from the relevant doctoral committee confirming the necessity of continued enrolment to the Student Administration Office by the end of the relevant re-enrolment deadline at the latest.

The CGS provides a form for the re-enrolment after the 12th semester (in German only, please contact us if you need help):

for holders of a German diploma (Bildungsinländer*innen)

for holders of a foreign diploma (Bildungsausländer*innen)

*International PhD students with a foreign diploma (Bildungsausländer*innen) need to hand in the relevant documents for a renewal of their enrolment after the 8th or 12th semester at the International Student Administration Office.
