Academic Writing in English (SoSe18) - Sesond session

20Jul

10:00 –

Instructor: Colin Foskett Second session: 20.07.2018, 10:00-13:00 in O.07.08

The purpose of this workshop is to provide postgraduates with guidelines and practice relating to writing papers, articles or their dissertation in English. Since participants will be writing about different topics and probably also in very different subject areas, the workshop will aim to be as individual and practical as possible and as general as necessary. What we do and how we do it is to a certain extent open to discussion. What follows is a working concept.

1. The FIRST SESSION will be introductory and will deal with the language of academic writing, focusing especially on key differences between German and English academic style. This session will use examples of academic writing.htt/

2. I would like each participant to submit in advance something that they have written on their academic topic. This could be an abstract or part of a paper or article intended for publication. This abstract or other piece of academic writing should not exceed one page in length and should be sent to the CGS (attachment to an e-mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de) together with your registration by 15th April. This will help me to prepare appropriate material for the first session, and I will also give individual feedback to each participant in this session.

3. You will be asked to submit a longer piece of academic writing by 15th July 2018, which could be a section or chapter of a paper or article. The SECOND SESSION will include detailed individual feedback and discussion of this written work.

This workshop is part of the special support concept for international doctoral students established by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the framework of the STIBET program.
