Academic Writing in English I
Leitung: Colin Foskett, M.A. Zeit: 10:15-12:00 Ort: T.09.01 (Grifflenberg Campus)
The purpose of this seminar is to provide postgraduates with guidelines and practice relating to writing papers, essays and articles in English. Since participants will be working on different projects, and probably also in different subject areas, the seminar will aim to be as individual and practical as possible and as general as necessary. What we do and how we do it is to a certain extent open to discussion. What follows is a working concept.
- The FIRST SESSIONS will be introductory, with general remarks on structuring, style, rhetoric, choice of title, writing an abstract, writing as exploration, learning by writing, problems with writing academic English etc. Much of this will apply to writing in any language, but key differences between German and English academic style will be discussed.
- The session will also use practical examples of up-to-date academic writing.
- In order to have your input before the first sessions, I would like each participant to prepare an abstract and title of a paper they perhaps aim to present at a conference and/or to publish. These abstracts (or some of them at least) can be discussed during the first session to illustrate important general points. Abstracts should be sub¬mitted to the CGS (attachment to an e-mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de) together with your registration by November 16th.
- You will then be asked to write your paper, and those papers handed in by February 1st (attachment to an e-mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de) will be made available to the whole group. The SECOND SESSIONS will focus on selected issues arising from the papers handed in, dealing with individual and practical aspects of writing academic English.
This seminar is part of the special support concept for inter-national doctoral students established by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the framework of the STIBET program.
Please register with an abstract (see below) by 16.11.2012
