The purpose of this seminar is to provide postgraduates with guidelines and practice relating to writing papers, essays and articles in English. Since participants will be working on different projects, and probably also in different subject areas, the seminar will aim to be as individual and practical as possible and as general as necessary. What we do and how wedo it is to a certain extent open to discussion. What follows is a working concept.

1. The FIRST SESSIONS will be introductory, with general remarks on structuring, style, rhetoric, choice of title, writing an abstract, writing as exploration, learning by writing, problems with writing academic English etc. Much of this will apply to writing in any language, but key differences between German and English academic style will be discussed.

2. The session will also use practical examples of up-to-date academic writing.

3. In order to have your input before the first sessions, I would like each participant to prepare an abstract and title of a paper they perhaps aim to present at a conference and/or to publish. These abstracts (or some of them at least) can be discussed during the first session to illustrate important general points. Abstracts should be submitted to the CGS (attachment to an e-mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de) together with your registration by November 8th 2013.

4. You will then be asked to write your paper and submit it by January 31st 2014 (attachment to an e-mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de). The SECOND SESSIONS will focus on issues arising from the papers handed in, dealing with individual and practical aspects of writing academic English.
