The purpose of the seminar is to provide postgraduates with guidelines and practice relating to writing papers, essays and articles in English. Given that each person will be working on a
different project, and for the most part also in a different subject, the seminar will aim to be as individual and practical as possible, and as general as necessary. What we do and how wedo it is open to discussion. What follows is a working concept.
1. The FIRST SESSION will be introductory, with general remarks on structuring, style, rhetoric, choice of title, writing an abstract, writing as exploration, learning by writing, problems with writing etc. – Much of this will apply to writing in any language, but key differences e.g. between German and English style and rhetoric will also be discussed.
2. The session will also use practical examples of up-to-date academic writing.
3. In order to have your input from the start, I would suggest that each member of the group prepares an abstract & title of a paper they aim (however distantly) to present at a conference and/or to publish. These abstracts (or some of them at least) can be discussed during the first session. Abstracts should be submitted (to CGS, mail to zgs[at]uni-wuppertal.de) by November 24th.
4. You will then be asked to write your paper, and papers handed in by February 2nd (mail to zgs@uni-wuppertal.de) will be both available for copying in the CGS office and uploaded onto Moodle. You can read them there, make your own notes, comments, queries and bring them to the SECOND SESSION. This will focus on selected issues from the papers handed in, foregrounding individual and practical aspects of writing.
This seminar is part of the special support concept for international doctoral students established by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the framework of the STIBET program.
