Innovation Dynamics in Mobile Communications
Betreuer: Prof. Dr. Paul J.J. Welfens (Wuppertal)

Mobile communications market is one of the youngest and most important sectors of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and has been characterised by significant growth across the OECD. The OECD (2006) predicts that to 2030 mobile Internet technologies will dominate the communications market because they are far more accessible then fixed line Internet such as DSL. Both developed and developing countries benefit from mobile communications technologies. Because the rollout of mobile infrastructure is much faster and cheaper than of fixed lines, the mobile communications sector is booming in many developing countries that do not possess a well-developed fixed-line infrastructure. As a result, mobile communications can help overcome differences among countries and regions in the use of ICT, frequently called the digital divide. The increased use of mobile Internet will, in turn, accelerate the diffusion of knowledge and strengthen the internationalisation of economic relations.
