Representation of Islam in Postcolonial Novel (Betreuer: Prof. Dr. Roy Sommer, Wuppertal)
Since the publication of Edward Said’s seminal study Orientalism in 1978 postcolonial studies have become of the dominating approaches in English literary studies. Despite the fact that the British Empire included Islamic colonies (parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh), however, the vast majority of scholarly studies in the fields of postcolonial and multicultural fiction tend to neglect the role of ISLAM in shaping cultural memory and collective identities portrayed in migrant writing.
This study seeks to address this shortcoming in postcolonial studies by focusing on the representation of Islam in the work of writers such as Salman Rushdie. The dissertation will be the first book length study that concentrates on Islam and fiction in English literature. It proceeds from the thesis that the neglect of this issue in existing research is largely due to the dominance of Western scholarship in this field by scholars who are not familiar with the symbolic and narrative traditions of Islamic art and literature. It will combine established approaches such as narrative theory, genre theory, inter-media studies and inter-textuality with a discussion of contemporary literary and cultural studies in Iran.
