Title and abstract of thesis project:

Critical Consciousness of Preservice Teachers

Students with low socioeconomic status and a family history of migration face systemic challenges (e.g. financial difficulties, discrimination, lack of additional support) to succeed in life (OECD, 2023). These factors can impact the motivation and academic performance of these students. To reduce these educational inequalities, teachers themselves should be critical and reflective (Gay & Kirkland, 2010). The concept of critical consciousness (CC) allows us to examine teachers' attributions, political self-efficacy, and actions regarding educational inequities. This doctoral project aims to investigate the level of critical consciousness of prospective teachers, the predictors of critical consciousness, the role of intersectionality and student characteristics (disadvantaged vs. privileged), the role of ingroup bias, and finally to test the effects of priming on critical consciousness
