Different ways for the N-functionalization of the closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H12]2- were developed in the past. The ammonio derivative of the closo-dodecaborate anion, [B12H11NH3]-, reacts with aryl aldehydes in methanol to N-protonated Schiff bases [B12H11NH=CHR]-.[1] We prepared and characterized a number of new derivatives with acceptor substituents (R= 4-(HO)C6H4, 4-FC6H4, 2,3-F2C6H3, 1,2-Br2-3-(HO)C6H2, 4-ClC6H4). Some of the products show interesting photo-physical properties. In addition, the direct arylation under high pressure of the ammonio cluster [B12H11NH3]- was investigated as well.
